Private William M. Durr: Local Design Project In Norwich, CT
As we approach the 4th of July Tomorrow, I wanted to share a recent project that we completed for a local hero here in Norwich. A local gentleman named Mr. Sullivan, who visits our store often, came in with a worn old plaque from the local First Congregational Church of Norwich. He explained that he was a member of the church and they would like to have the plaque redone. Naturally, we were more than happy to take on this project.

The History Behind Private William M. Durr
Upon completing the plaque, my husband, Marc, researched Private William M Durr and found that a young group of men who belonged to the WITS foundation had planted a spruce tree in Private Durr's honor in 1925.

Private Durr was born in Norwich on December 2, 1898, the son of Martin and Katie (Rafferty) Durr. Their family home was located at 7 Lathrop avenue in Norwichtown. William was described as an attractive young man with many lovable qualities, including leadership. He was valedictorian of his graduating class from the Town Street School.

William was 19 years old when he enlisted in the Army. He completed basic training at Fort Stewart and was shipped out of Newport News to France in April 1918. In July, the Germans began what is called the Second Battle of the Marne, located in the Aisle-Marne region of France.

After several days of fierce fighting, the enemy was pushed back, and the 3rd Division began crossing the Marne River in pursuit of capturing the heights of Mt. St. Pere and the Villages of Chatebes. Unfortunately, it was during this time that Private Durr lost his life. The name of Pvt William M Durr appears among 1,060 other names on the interior walls of the vestibule at the Aisle Marne American Cemetery in France.
